About Reece:
i’m reece and i consider myself a starter, a traveler and an athlete. i’m also known for wearing a lot of brightly colored plaid.
i’m not going to pretend that i’m big-time enough to have someone else write my bio. i also don’t like capital letters. i do love startups and i’m currently the founding CEO of my second company, Shelby.tv.
before this i started TeamHomeField.com with my friends Dan and Joe. before that i played pro lacrosse (yes, it exists) and before that, i worked in Hollywood. before that i traveled around the world.
and where did it all start? Falmouth, MA, a quiet tourist town on Cape Cod, where my family owned and operated a couple restaurants (through which i learned a lot about hard work) and where i spent every day by the sea.
overall, anything but prototypical, probably goofier than you’d expect, non-technical cofounder guy who ‘hustles’ and ‘crushes’ things or something like that, and is lucky to work and be friends with a lot of really smart people.
About Dan:
Dan loves technology, cars, and has especially enjoyed founding a technology-based company and naming it after a car. Before finding his passion for entrepreneurship, Dan spent several years working in the voice technology group of Cisco Systems.
Dan holds a B.S. in computer engineering from Brown University and although he primarily writes in Ruby and JavaScript these days, he feels at home with everything from transistors to product vision. Among his many achievements, it’s also important to note that Dan does a really great Terminator impression.
Why are you an entrepreneur? Reece answers...
i never said "i want to be an entrepreneur." we just started with an idea and set out to build it, but when i looked back on it, i realized that my parents were entrepreneurs, that i'd always been interested in invention/creation and that i knew i would never go work at a big company, so whether intentional or not, i'm an entrepreneur.
What can a fellow learn from Reece?
in the tech/startup community, i'm known as a hustler/networker who lives and breathes our vision with intense passion, but there's a lot more to this game than running around meeting and pitching people. while engineers love to harp on non-technical guys like me, my skill set is pretty wide as well as deep in some areas due to the wide range of responsibilities i've had. so far in the two startups we've created, i have particularly learned fundraising (friends/family, angel, & VC), product development, UX design, marketing, branding, social media production, recruiting/team building, incorporation matters, leadership/team management, and business development.
What can a fellow learn from Spinner (aka Dan)?
How to say no.
For example: no, I will not answer this question. My time is better spent building an elegant product inside and out, understanding the technical landscape, refining my vision of the future I want to build, and removing every unnecessary bit along the way (from the product, it's architecture, our messaging, etc.).
Maybe some of that will rub off. ;-]
What areas of business (sales, marketing, product, biz dev, etc.) would a fellow be exposed to while working with Reece?
my ideal fellow is going to be right by my side for a lot of the work we do. this means sitting in on meetings with for all of the above responsibilities, then executing in these areas, both with my help and on your own. i love having someone around to bounce ideas off of constantly, whether it's talking about product, marketing or team, so great communication skills - particularly with me - are a must
What areas of tech will a fellow be exposed to while working with Dan?
We're heavy with modern-web, iOS, and big data tech (rails, mongo, node.js, html5, javascript, objective-c, etc). I want to work with someone interested in these areas broadly, but who also has a passion to dive in and build something. Certainly not short on stuff I'd like to see built across our platform
What do you both expect out of a fellow?
the obvious qualities are responsible, hard working etc, but what we really want is someone we can
1. trust to get things done entirely. we do not want to micro-manage, or manage at all if we don't have to
2. someone who is conscientious. the person who is anticipating the little things and thinks ahead
3. someone with a sense of humility and humor. these go a long way when we're in the office late working on tough problems
the hope is that we develop a great relationship, both professionally and personally, where we can trust in you to get things done as we hand over more and more responsibility over time.
What makes your startup unique?
Shelby.tv is a beautiful place because of our amazing team. everyday we come to work excited to hang with brilliant, funny, good people, and can honestly say that everyone feels the same way. we have fun, work hard and enjoy each others' company in a way most companies don't even consider and for that, we are extremely proud.
About Shelby.tv:
Shelby.tv is the most amazing way to discover and enjoy web video.
