Q&A WITH MIKE

WHY ARE YOU AN ENTREPRENEUR?

My proudest accomplishment is never having written a resume.
After college, I ran for city council using social media to get elected. Politics seemed natural to me since I’ve always had a passion for communities. After holding office though, I realized that a political campaign wasn’t very different from a branding campaign. With that knowledge, and in an effort to make a profit and still build communities, I founded Carrot Creative with my business partners in the basement.
At the end of the day, Carrot is what it is because of mine and my partner’s desires to be our own bosses and not listen to anyone else.

WHAT CAN A FELLOW LEARN FROM YOU?

I’d like to think I set an example of someone who fights for what they believe in, against all criticism.  When I founded Carrot, all of the larger agencies laughed at the idea of basing a business on just social media. They were wrong, and I was successfully right in believing that social was going to be the future of communication, especially for brands. A fellow will learn that confidence is of utmost importance and that when you create a place that you want to work at and surround yourself with talented people who share your vision, you can accomplish great things.

WHAT WILL YOUR FELLOW BE EXPOSED TO?

Big picture management; dreaming; office culture…  I’ve spent the last three weekends scraping paint off walls, scrubbing floors and sanding tables to build a bigger and better office for my employees (at Carrot, we fix our own problems, we don’t pay to have them go away). If anything, I’ll teach my fellow how to constantly grow and move forward while keeping employees top of mind and your ego in check.
Carrot isn’t just a social agency either; we are a family of brands and ideas under theCarrot umbrella and it’s my job to keep that family healthy and happy. The fellow that comes to Carrot will not only learn what managing clients and an agency is like, but what mentoring startups and growing digital communities (like Digital Dumbo) is like.

WHAT DO YOU EXPECT OUT OF A FELLOW?

I want someone who wakes up in the morning and their first thought is, “How am I going to be successful today?” I live and breathe Carrot as a company, so I expect my fellow to do the same and more so. I want someone who isn’t sensitive and can hold their own, while contributing to the cause that Carrots are fighting for.  I also expect someone who is a digital native, fully versed in all things social media.

WHAT MAKES YOUR STARTUP UNIQUE?

Carrot Creative was the first social media agency to market in 2005 and is now a full-service agency with top-tier clients including Jaguar, Wilson, Red Bull, and Target.  We make every idea we conceive – from strategy to design to development to analytics. While we are growing rapidly, we remain a startup by attitude, drive, culture and constant hustle. We are an agency with a sense of adventure motivating our every creative move.
